Botswana Steps Up Investment Push as Chinese Firms Explore Manufacturing Opportunities. Botswana has strengthened its drive to attract foreign direct investment through an investment promotion mission in China, where government representatives engaged leading businesses on opportunities in manufacturing, renewable energy and other strategic sectors.

The delegation was led by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship Joel Ramaphoi together with Presidential Envoy for Investment and Trade Affairs in the Asia-Pacific Region Miles Nan.

During the mission, the delegation held discussions with major Chinese photovoltaic (PV) manufacturers to explore renewable energy investments and opportunities for local production in Botswana. The engagements formed part of the country’s broader strategy to expand industrial capacity and encourage investment in value-added industries.

Investment promotion activities also included roundtable sessions in Cangzhou and Xingtai, located in Hebei Province. Nearly 200 Chinese companies participated in the engagements, where they were introduced to Botswana’s investment opportunities, business environment and its strategic position as a gateway to the Southern African market

According to the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC), the discussions highlighted several sectors that generated strong investor interest. These included agriculture and agro-processing, mining, manufacturing, and light industry, all of which align with Botswana’s efforts to diversify its economy and promote greater value addition.

The investment mission provided an opportunity for Chinese businesses to learn more about Botswana’s industrial ambitions and explore potential areas for collaboration with local partners.

BITC said several companies expressed interest in visiting Botswana to further assess investment prospects and partnership opportunities following the engagements in China.

The organisation added that the mission reflects Botswana’s continued commitment to attracting strategic investments that contribute to industrialisation, support job creation and strengthen long-term economic growth.
