BDC and BADEA Sign Intent for €100 Million Financing Package to Boost Botswana’s Private SSector. The Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) have signed Statements of Intent for financing facilities worth €100 million, a move aimed at strengthening private-sector growth and expanding opportunities for citizen participation in Botswana’s economy.
Valued at approximately BWP1.5 billion, the proposed financing package comprises two facilities designed to improve access to funding for businesses and support key sectors of the economy.
The package includes a €40 million long-term Private Sector Facility that will provide financing for commercially viable businesses and profit-oriented state-owned enterprises. It also features a €60 million revolving Trade Finance Facility intended to improve access to working capital while supporting the procurement of essential goods, including medicines, medical consumables, hospital equipment and spare parts.A
According to BDC, the partnership is expected to enhance its ability to finance businesses that contribute to economic diversification, strengthen local value chains, create sustainable employment opportunities and improve Botswana’s global competitiveness.
The signing also coincided with the announcement of BDC’s strengthened Citizen Economic Empowerment Programme. The initiative introduces a transaction-based financing model aimed at assisting qualifying wholly citizen-owned enterprises with confirmed commercial opportunities to access the capital required to fulfil contracts, establish business track records and expand into larger markets.
The proposed financing facilities are aligned with the objectives of Botswana’s Twelfth National Development Plan and the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme, both of which recognise the private sector as a key driver of inclusive economic growth, industrialisation and long-term national development.
BDC said the partnership reflects its commitment to securing strategic financing partnerships that support sustainable business growth and broaden access to capital for enterprises across Botswana.
