Botswana Oil Expands Fuel Security with 30 Million Litre Ghanzi Depot. Botswana Oil Limited (BOL) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the country’s energy security with the construction of the Ghanzi Fuel Depot Project, a strategic investment designed to boost national fuel storage capacity.

This week, the BOL Board of Directors and Executive Committee, led by Acting Chief Executive Officer Latelang Chakalisa, conducted a site visit to assess progress and receive updates from the project team and G4 Consulting Engineers. Located at Turn 44 along the A2 highway to Mamuno before Ghanzi, the depot is set to store up to 30 million litres of petroleum products, significantly enhancing Botswana’s long-term fuel resilience.

The project represents a total investment of P635 million, with P396 million worth of contracts already awarded. Importantly, 65% of these contracts have gone to citizen-owned companies, underscoring the initiative’s role in promoting local economic empowerment and participation in large-scale infrastructure development.

Employment creation has also been notable, with 265 jobs generated to date, of which 211 positions are held by Batswana citizens. The project team highlighted key milestones achieved, while also acknowledging challenges that have contributed to delays in the construction timeline. Despite these setbacks, BOL remains optimistic that the depot will be completed in early 2027.

Beyond national energy security, the depot’s strategic location positions it to benefit from regional trade opportunities and Namibia’s expanding energy landscape. It is expected to improve fuel supply reliability within Botswana while supporting broader economic growth.

The Ghanzi Fuel Depot Project stands as one of Botswana’s most significant infrastructure investments, aimed at reinforcing energy security, boosting regional connectivity, and driving sustainable development.
