Tsodilo Resources Unveils Rare Earth Discovery in GGcwihaba. Tsodilo Resources Ltd has announced a major breakthrough with the discovery of 15 rare earth minerals and six rare minerals within its Gcwihaba exploration license area in Botswana’s North West District.
During a media tour, company geologist Merry Toteng explained that the discovery comes at a pivotal time as the world transitions toward green energy and technologies that rely heavily on critical minerals. She emphasized that the find places Botswana on the global map in the rare earth sector and offers an opportunity to diversify the economy beyond diamond mining.
Toteng noted that investigations are ongoing to identify additional resources, with Tsodilo Resources partnering with institutions such as the Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) and the University of Cape Town to advance research and development.
BITRI specialist Bakang Modukanele described rare earth minerals as scarce and highly valuable commodities, highlighting their importance in modern technologies. He said the discovery positions Botswana as a potential leader in rare earth production and could help diversify the economy at a time when the diamond market has slowed. Modukanele also revealed that the area contains iron deposits estimated at more than 400 million tonnes, presenting further opportunities for beneficiation and manufacturing industries.
He added that BITRI’s advanced laboratories and expertise in mineral analysis will support research and local processing, potentially reducing Botswana’s reliance on imported mineral-based products and boosting regional exports.F
From the University of Cape Town, Geoffrey Howarth emphasized the collaborative research underway to understand the geology of the deposits. He explained that studies in geochemistry, mineralogy, and beneficiation will guide future drilling programs and improve extraction efficiency.
