Botswana Stock Exchange Crosses Historic P1 Trillion Milestone. The Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) has achieved a landmark moment in its history, surpassing P1 trillion in market capitalisation for the first time since its inception. The milestone, reached on 11 May 2026, underscores the resilience and maturity of Botswana’s financial markets while reinforcing the country’s growing role in Africa’s investment landscape.
According to official figures, the total value of listed instruments closed at approximately P1.1 trillion, comprising P974.7 billion in Equity market capitalisation, P41.6 billion from Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), and P42.2 billion from the Debt market.
Driving the surge were gains recorded by Anglo American and the NewGold ETF, the only listed instruments to register price movements on the day. Anglo American’s share price rose by P56.06 to close at P737.52, while the NewGold ETF advanced by P25.04 to P613.54 per unit. Anglo American remains the dominant counter on the exchange, accounting for nearly 89.1% of Equity market capitalisation and more than 82% of the total market value of all listed instruments.
Commenting on the achievement, BSE Chairperson Neo Mooki described the milestone as a strong indication of Botswana’s economic potential and the collective efforts of regulators, investors, and market participants. She emphasized that a stronger and deeper capital market enhances Botswana’s standing as an investment destination while creating opportunities for citizens to participate in wealth creation and long-term growth.
With market capitalisation now estimated at nearly 2.5 times Botswana’s GDP, the accomplishment highlights the depth and sophistication of the country’s financial ecosystem relative to its economy. The BSE has reaffirmed its focus on sustaining growth, attracting new listings, promoting innovation, and positioning Botswana as a leading capital-raising hub on the continent.
