Mmamabula Coal Project Marks New Chapter in Botswana Mining. The Mmamabula Coal Mine, developed and operated by Maatla Resources, has officially entered production and is preparing for its grand opening. This marks Botswana’s newest addition to its mining portfolio, with operations beginning in January 2026 after years of planning and construction.

Situated about 145 kilometers north of Gaborone, the mine is strategically located near major transport routes, accessible via the A1 tarred road and an additional stretch along the Dibete–Martinsdrift tar road. The project is designed to produce high-grade thermal coal for both export and regional supply, positioning Botswana as a growing player in the energy commodities market.

Maatla Resources began on-site construction in early 2023, steadily advancing toward operational readiness. The mine contains over 90 million tons of high-grade thermal coal in situ within the well-explored Mmamabula Coalfields, offering significant long-term production potential.

Backing the project is HMS Bergbau AG, a German-based independent raw materials trading and marketing company, which holds a 51 percent stake in Maatla Resources (Pty.) Ltd. HMS Bergbau AG is internationally active, specializing in reliable, just-in-time deliveries of raw materials, energy products, ores, cement, and other commodities to industrial customers across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Its involvement underscores the global interest in Botswana’s resource sector.

The Mmamabula Coal Project is distinct from the Jindal Mmamabula Coal Energy Project, highlighting the diversity of initiatives underway in the region. With production underway and an official opening imminent, the mine represents a significant milestone for Botswana’s mining industry, reinforcing the country’s role in supplying energy commodities to both regional and international markets
