Power Ambitions in Focus as Naveen Jindal Reviews Botswana’s Mmamabula Project. Indian businessman Naveen Jindal has visited Botswana to assess progress on the Mmamabula Energy Project, a large-scale independent power initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s electricity supply.
The project, valued at multiple billions of pula, is designed to generate 700 megawatts of electricity for Botswana’s national grid. During his visit, Jindal toured the site to review construction developments and ongoing work linked to the project’s rollout.
The Mmamabula Energy Project was officially launched in October 2023, with Jindal joined at the time by former Botswana president Mokgweetsi Masisi. The development is structured under a Power Purchase Agreement with Botswana Power Corporation, which will receive electricity generated by the plant.
Under the agreement, Jindal will build, own, and operate the coal-fired power station. The facility will be powered by coal sourced from the Mmamabula coal mine, where the company holds significant mining rights. Electricity generated is expected to be supplied to the national utility over a 30-year period.
The project is considered one of the largest foreign direct investments in Botswana, with funding reaching financial close last year through Axis Bank. This milestone enabled further progress in construction and implementation phases.
Recent developments at the site include the arrival of a boiler for the first unit, marking a key step forward in the build process. The project is also expected to contribute to employment, with thousands of jobs anticipated during construction and additional permanent roles once operations begin.
Jindal, chairman of Jindal Steel and Power, holds mining licences covering billions of tonnes of coal in the East Mmamabula coalfields, positioning the project within a broader resource development framework.
