France Turns to Botswana for Uranium Supply After Setback in Niger. France is seeking alternative uranium sources from Botswana following disruptions to its long-standing operations in Niger, where a recent military-led shift in government has altered existing mining agreements.
The change in direction comes after Niger’s authorities moved to revoke cooperation with French-linked operations, nationalise the SOMAIR uranium mine, and accuse France of exploiting the country’s natural resources. These developments have significantly affected France’s access to uranium from the region.
French nuclear company Orano has since been forced to reassess its supply strategy. Niger has historically been a key source of uranium for France’s nuclear energy sector, making the loss of access a notable shift in its resource pipeline.Attention has now turned to Botswana, a country widely recognised for its diamond industry but increasingly focused on diversifying its mining sector. Estimates indicate that Botswana holds around 800,000 tonnes of uranium reserves, positioning it as a potential alternative supplier.
The move reflects broader global dynamics, as countries expand nuclear energy programmes and seek stable uranium sources. France, which relies heavily on nuclear power, is among several nations reassessing supply chains in response to geopolitical changes and resource competition.
Botswana’s potential role in this shift highlights its growing significance beyond diamonds, as interest builds around its untapped mineral resources. However, no formal agreements have been publicly confirmed at this stage.
The situation underscores how political developments in resource-rich regions can reshape international supply networks, particularly in sectors tied to energy security. As demand for uranium continues to rise, countries with viable reserves are expected to draw increased global attention.
