Safflower Farming Highlighted as Export Opportunity at Chobe Connect 2026. At the Chobe Connect 2026 Investment Conference, local agripreneur Mr. Solomon Tshenyo, a shareholder in Mo-Petals under Panda Safflower Growers, presented safflower farming as a promising export opportunity for Botswana.
Mr. Tshenyo revealed that he has planted 100 hectares of safflower in Pandamatenga this season, underscoring the crop’s potential to contribute to both local agricultural development and international trade. He described safflower as a high-value cash crop, noting its strong oil quality and protein content, which make it attractive for diverse uses.
“Safflower offers full value with minimal waste,” Tshenyo explained, highlighting its resilience as a crop that requires low water input, performs well under drought conditions, and grows with limited fertiliser. These attributes position safflower as a sustainable option for farmers seeking to adapt to climate challenges while maintaining productivity.
He further emphasized the crop’s market potential, pointing out that organic safflower oil can fetch between P400 and P500 per litre on international markets. This price range reflects growing global demand for plant-based oils and sustainable agricultural products.
The presentation at Chobe Connect reinforced the importance of diversifying Botswana’s agricultural exports and tapping into niche markets that value resilience and sustainability. By spotlighting safflower, Tshenyo demonstrated how local farmers can leverage innovation and strategic crop choices to expand their reach beyond domestic markets.
The showcase also aligned with the conference’s broader theme of promoting green and climate-aligned enterprises, encouraging investors and stakeholders to explore opportunities that combine profitability with environmental responsibility.
Mr. Tshenyo’s initiative highlights the potential of Botswana’s agricultural sector to contribute meaningfully to national economic growth while positioning local products competitively on the global stage.
