UN and Statistics Botswana Strengthen Collaboration on Data-Driven Development. The UN Country Team hosted a delegation from Statistics Botswana, led by Statistician General Dr. Khaufelo Raymond Lekobane, for discussions focused on advancing evidence-based decision-making in the implementation of National Development Plan 12 (NDP 12).
The meeting highlighted the importance of aligning sectoral data initiatives with national priorities to ensure that development strategies are informed by accurate and timely statistics. Dr. Lekobane and his team shared ongoing efforts to strengthen data systems, emphasizing the role of reliable information in driving impactful and sustainable development outcomes.
UN Resident Coordinator Ms. Wenyan Yang reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Statistics Botswana, noting that their work is critical in shaping national progress. “Data is a strategic asset for effective planning, monitoring, and evaluation. By strengthening collaboration, we can ensure that Botswana’s development agenda is guided by evidence and delivers meaningful results,” she said.
Both teams reiterated their shared vision of building a stronger, data-driven future for the nation. The discussions underscored the need for robust partnerships to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in public sector performance.
The engagement reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that statistics are not only collected but also effectively utilized to inform policy decisions. By leveraging data, Botswana aims to improve governance, track progress on national development goals, and respond more effectively to emerging challenges.
The collaboration between the UN and Statistics Botswana is expected to reinforce institutional capacity, strengthen national data frameworks, and promote inclusive development. As NDP 12 moves forward, evidence-based approaches will remain central to achieving Botswana’s socio-economic aspirations.
