Creative Sector Insights Shared at Botswana School of Business Sciences. Marang Selolwane, Creative and Cultural Sector Development Coordinator, joined a panel discussion at the Botswana School of Business Sciences (formerly Botswana Accountancy College), where she shared perspectives on shaping and supporting Botswana’s creative sector through policy development and industry engagement.
Drawing from her professional experience, Selolwane highlighted both challenges and opportunities within the creative economy. She pointed to the need for addressing unregulated pay structures, encouraging the formalisation of creative businesses, and improving access to financial systems. These measures, she explained, are essential for building sustainable careers in the creative and cultural industries.
Selolwane also emphasized the importance of equipping artists and creatives with practical knowledge. She urged them to understand contracts, build strong digital presences, and intentionally package and brand their work to remain competitive in a growing industry. Such steps, she noted, are critical for ensuring that creative professionals can thrive in both local and international markets.
The session reinforced the value of creativity not only as a career path but also as a powerful economic force. By engaging students directly, the discussion provided practical considerations for navigating and professionalising future careers in the sector.
The event formed part of ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between learning and industry, ensuring that students are exposed to real-world insights and strategies for success. It also underscored the role of policy, mentorship, and structured support in unlocking the full potential of Botswana’s creative economy.
Through initiatives like this, stakeholders aim to strengthen the creative sector’s contribution to national development, while empowering young people to pursue sustainable and impactful careers in the arts and cultural industries.
