Vice President Gaolathe Urges Stronger Diplomatic Partnerships Ahead of Botswana’s 60th Independence. As Botswana prepares to mark 60 years of independence, Vice President and Minister of Finance Ndaba Gaolathe has called for deeper collaboration with international partners to support the nation’s long-term economic transformation.
Speaking at a Policy Dialogue with the Diplomatic Corps this afternoon, Gaolathe emphasized that diplomacy remains central to Botswana’s growth trajectory. He noted that stability, predictability, and credible partnerships are more valuable than ever as the country seeks to diversify its economy beyond diamonds.
The Vice President provided an overview of the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP), which outlines the nation’s vision to become a digitally enabled, export-oriented, and regionally integrated economy by 2036. The programme is designed to drive economic diversification, foster job creation, and strengthen competitiveness in global markets.
“Botswana does not seek charity. We offer partnership,” Gaolathe stated, underscoring the country’s readiness to collaborate with international stakeholders in mutually beneficial ways. He identified several priority sectors for cooperation, including renewable energy, logistics, tourism, financial services, digital innovation, and mineral beneficiation.
The dialogue provided an opportunity for Botswana to reaffirm its commitment to building strong diplomatic ties while inviting partners to contribute to its transformation agenda. By highlighting both opportunities and challenges, Gaolathe positioned Botswana as a reliable partner in advancing sustainable development and regional integration.
As Botswana approaches its independence milestone, the call for stronger partnerships reflects the government’s recognition that global collaboration is essential to achieving resilience and inclusive growth. The emphasis on diversification signals a deliberate shift toward building an economy that is less dependent on diamonds and more aligned with emerging global trends.
The engagement concluded with a renewed commitment to deepen diplomatic relations and strengthen cooperation across strategic sectors, reinforcing Botswana’s vision for a prosperous future.
