Botswana Horse Racing Industry Celebrates First Starting Gates in Kokotsha. A historic milestone was marked in Kokotsha as the horse racing industry officially welcomed Botswana’s first-ever starting gates, sponsored by the Ministry of Sports and Arts (MOSA). The launch was witnessed by the Gambling Authority family, alongside community members and stakeholders, in what is being hailed as a transformative moment for the sport.
The introduction of starting gates is seen as a game-changer, bringing fairness, integrity, safety, and professional standards to horse racing in Botswana. By ensuring equal starts for all competitors, the gates elevate the sport to international standards and strengthen its appeal as a professional and regulated activity.
Minister of Sports and Arts, Hon. Jacob Kelebeng, emphasized the broader significance of the development, describing the gates as the “starting line” for economic growth in the region. He noted that professionalizing horse racing creates opportunities for tourism, job creation, and community empowerment, particularly in Kokotsha and surrounding areas.
Acting CEO of the Gambling Authority, Moruntshi Kemorwale, highlighted the importance of responsible betting in the industry. He reminded spectators that while betting is part of the sport’s culture, it must be conducted responsibly to ensure sustainability and protect participants.
The event was celebrated not only for its electrifying races but also for the symbolic victory it represents for Botswana’s sporting landscape. Organizers and the Kokotsha community were congratulated for their role in achieving this milestone, which is expected to pave the way for further growth and recognition of horse racing as a professional sport in the country.
With the arrival of starting gates, Botswana’s horse racing industry has taken a significant step forward, positioning itself as both a cultural attraction and an economic driver for local communities.
