Motheo Copper Mine Highlights Economic Contribution and Long-Term Investment in Botswana. The Motheo Copper Mine has been identified as a major contributor to Botswana’s economy, with projected economic value exceeding P38 billion over its initial 10 year operational life.
Speaking during the Botswana Country Showcase in Cape Town, Jamie Caratti, Asset President of the Motheo Copper Project at Sandfire Resources, described Botswana as an example of responsible mining supported by long term partnership.
Caratti stated that the modern copper operation, located in the Kalahari Copper Belt, reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable resource development. He noted that in the 2024 financial year, the operation contributed approximately P4 billion to the national economy through wages, taxes, royalties and payments to local suppliers.
Commercial production began in July 2023, with output increasing from 3.2 million tonnes per annum to 5.6 million tonnes per annum. Copper production reached 58,000 tonnes in FY25 and is trending toward 60,000 tonnes in FY26. The project was completed on time and within budget despite disruptions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Caratti outlined infrastructure built to international standards, including a large accommodation village, grid power supply, a tailings storage facility and a water management system using managed aquifer recharge.
Employment and skills development remain central to operations, with more than 1,900 employees, the majority citizens of Botswana. Sustainability initiatives form part of the company’s operating framework, including biodiversity targets and a solar plant approved by the Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority.
Exploration activities continue across nearly 10,000 square kilometres, supporting efforts to extend the mine’s operational life. Government of Botswana and Sandfire remain engaged in cooperation supporting economic development and resource management.
