Sandfire CEO Highlights Environmental Care, Capital Discipline and Local Partnerships. Environmental responsibility, disciplined investment decisions, and stronger local partnerships took centre stage as mining leaders gathered to discuss the future of resource development. Addressing delegates, Brendan Harris, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Sandfire Resources, outlined what he described as the foundations of long-term shared prosperity in the extractive sector.

Speaking in Cape Town, South Africa, he emphasised that responsible mining begins with environmental protection and respect for cultural heritage in host communities.

Harris said mining companies develop resources on behalf of society, making sustained operational discipline essential from construction through production. He noted that capital allocation carries social consequences, warning that directing scarce financial and human resources toward low-return assets ultimately undermines community benefit. While corporate social programmes play a role, he argued that taxation generated by high-margin, well-managed operations remains the mining sector’s most significant economic contribution.

With global momentum building around electrification and decarbonisation, he said responsible production of essential minerals is central to sustainable growth.

Drawing on experience in Botswana, Sandfire highlighted partnership as a practical tool for strengthening supply chains and expanding economic participation. The company recently approved a life-of-mine fuel supply agreement with a citizen-empowered enterprise planning a listing on the Botswana Stock Exchange, linking operational security with broader access to capital markets.

Harris said the long-term arrangement supports supply stability while creating pathways for local economic participation. He also urged closer cooperation among industry peers, governments, and local businesses to strengthen domestic supply networks and improve risk-sharing in complex jurisdictions. Greater collaboration, he said, can help the mining sector deliver lasting economic value for communities and future generations.

His remarks underscored the importance of aligning operational performance with social responsibility, positioning responsible resource development as a shared pathway toward inclusive and durable prosperity across mining regions worldwide, particularly where investment decisions shape.
