Botswana Charts Policy-Driven Path Toward Domestic Pharmaceutical Production. Policymakers and industry stakeholders in Botswana are intensifying discussions on building a more self-reliant pharmaceutical sector, following a national budget speech review convened by Boitekanelo College. The gathering focused on translating policy direction into practical measures aimed at strengthening medicines security and expanding locally relevant production capacity. Held under the theme of resilience and sustainability, the event brought together policymakers, regulators, clinicians, procurement specialists and regional experts to discuss workable solutions.
Assistant Minister of Health Lawrence Ookeditse outlined a procurement-led approach that could reshape how government supports domestic manufacturing. He indicated that authorities may prioritise purchasing from local producers that meet quality, price and delivery expectations rather than relying solely on traditional tender systems.
Industry representatives and regulators highlighted the complexity of pricing structures, procurement processes and supply-chain coordination across the pharmaceutical ecosystem. Nametsagang Ramogotsi, vice president of the Pharmaceutical Society, emphasised that multiple perspectives are needed to address cost pressures and ensure sustainable market participation.
Discussions also underscored the broader economic implications of developing domestic manufacturing, including reduced import dependence, improved medicines access and expanded industrial activity. The initiative aligns with the Botswana Economic Transformation Plan, which sets out goals for long-term structural change and sectoral growth.
Officials also pointed to collaboration with the Africa Centre for Disease Control as part of efforts to strengthen procurement mechanisms that encourage national production. Plans are underway to restructure the Central Medical Stores into a state-owned enterprise with greater operational autonomy.
Speaking at the forum, Tlokweng Member of Parliament Phenyo Segokgo said policymakers are aligned on advancing local manufacturing capacity and strengthening long-term sector development. Participants described the review as a platform for practical coordination between public institutions, private suppliers and professional bodies as Botswana works toward a more resilient and self-sustaining pharmaceutical future over the coming years through continued dialogue implementation.
