Bank of Botswana Issues Currency Handling Warning Ahead of Saturday Celebrations. The Bank of Botswana has issued a public reminder ahead of upcoming Saturday celebrations, warning that improper handling of banknotes and coins is illegal. The announcement highlights concerns about practices that damage currency or alter its physical condition during festivities. Officials say such actions violate national law and established policies governing the treatment of the country’s money.
The Bank specifically cautioned against using cash in decorative or celebratory displays including cash bouquets, confetti, and cake decorations. It also warned against writing on, tearing, stapling, or burning banknotes, as well as any other form of defacement. According to the institution, these practices are prohibited under the Bank of Botswana Act and the Clean Banknotes and Coin Policy.
The Bank said damaging currency undermines the integrity and appearance of the Pula, which serves as the country’s official medium of exchange. Actions that interfere with the condition of notes and coins may result in legal consequences. The Bank noted that penalties can include fines, imprisonment, or both, depending on the nature of the offence.
In its message to the public, the Bank urged individuals to handle banknotes and coins with care at all times. It encouraged citizens to remain aware of legal responsibilities associated with currency use, particularly during periods of public celebration. The Bank further called on members of the public to report any misuse of money that they observe.
The reminder forms part of ongoing efforts to preserve the quality and circulation of Botswana’s currency. Officials emphasised that maintaining clean and undamaged notes supports confidence in the national monetary system. They added that responsible handling of cash helps protect the usability and value of physical currency over time. The Bank said cooperation remains essential in safeguarding the integrity of the Pula and ensuring it continues to function effectively in everyday transactions.
