Botswana Restates Support for Local Diamond Beneficiation Amid Global Trade Developments. The Government of Botswana has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting and advancing the country’s local diamond beneficiation sector, following recent reports about potential duty-free access for diamond products into the United States market.

In a statement, the Ministry of Minerals and Energy said it is aware of developments related to possible changes in U.S. trade measures affecting diamond products. While the matter remains subject to final confirmation by U.S. authorities, the ministry noted that such a move could help restore market opportunities for the downstream diamond industry. Elevated tariffs in recent periods have contributed to reduced exports to the U.S. market, affecting global diamond processing activities.

Botswana has made strategic investments in diamond beneficiation as part of its broader economic transformation agenda. According to the ministry, beneficiation plays a critical role in job creation, skills development, and local value addition, and remains a key pillar of the country’s mineral policy.

The ministry emphasised the importance of ensuring that international trade arrangements support emerging beneficiation centres rather than placing them at a disadvantage. It said Botswana continues to engage at a high level with international partners to explore pathways that promote fairness in the global diamond trade and safeguard the competitiveness of its local diamond sector.

Government-to-government discussions with key partners are ongoing, with the ministry indicating that engagements are progressing positively. These talks are being conducted with consideration for the sequencing and timing of broader U.S. trade negotiations with other major economies, which have influenced Botswana’s approach.

The ministry further expressed confidence in Botswana’s standing as a trusted global diamond partner, citing ethical sourcing practices, regulatory integrity, and an established beneficiation model. It said engagement with industry stakeholders and international partners will continue, with updates to be communicated as appropriate.

Botswana aims to maintain investor confidence, support sustained industry growth, and strengthen its position as a globally competitive centre for natural diamonds, the ministry said.
