From One Bakkie to Millions: Choppies Marks 22-Year Retail Milestone. Choppies Group has marked a major milestone in its corporate journey, reflecting on a growth story that began 22 years ago with a single bakkie and has since developed into one of the region’s most recognisable retail brands. Today, the group is celebrating that progress by giving away millions of pula in gift prizes, underscoring how far the business has come over more than two decades.

Speaking on the milestone, Choppies Group chief executive officer Ramachandran Ottapathu highlighted the broader social impact of the company’s growth, noting that women make up the majority of beneficiaries in this year’s giveaway. According to Ottapathu, 70 percent of the winners are women, a figure he said reflects the group’s ongoing commitment to empowering women within the communities it serves.

Ottapathu said the journey from modest beginnings to a large-scale retail operation was shaped by resilience, customer trust and a strong connection to local communities. He emphasised that Choppies’ continued expansion has been closely linked to its ability to remain accessible to everyday consumers while creating opportunities across its value chain.

The current giveaway forms part of the group’s milestone activities and is intended to recognise customer loyalty built over many years. While the prizes are significant in value, the initiative also signals Choppies’ appreciation for the communities that have supported its growth since its early days.

Over the past 22 years, Choppies has evolved from a small operation into a major retail employer and market presence, with its growth mirroring changing consumer needs across the region. The company’s leadership maintains that community engagement and inclusion remain central to its approach.

As Choppies marks this chapter in its history, the group says it remains focused on sustaining its operations, strengthening its community footprint and ensuring that its growth continues to deliver shared value locally.
