Commemorative P50 Banknote Honouring Olympic Achievement to Enter Circulation. Botswana’s recent Olympic achievements will soon be reflected in everyday transactions as a commemorative P50 banknote officially enters circulation. The Bank of Botswana has announced that the special edition note will be released to the public on 6 February 2026, allowing citizens to carry a symbol of national pride in their wallets.
The banknote was first unveiled during the Central Bank’s 50th Golden Jubilee celebrations. It recognises Botswana’s accomplishments at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, led by 200 metre gold medallist Letsile Tebogo and the men’s 4 by 400 metre relay team, who earned a silver medal. Their performances marked a significant moment in the country’s sporting history and are now being honoured through national currency.
In addition to celebrating athletic success, the design of the commemorative note incorporates elements linked to Botswana’s heritage and development. These include imagery of the Bank of Botswana’s redeveloped headquarters and the well known Motswedi diamond. The note also retains modern security features consistent with current currency standards.
According to the central bank, the commemorative P50 will circulate alongside the existing P50 note. However, it will not be reprinted, making it a limited issue within the country’s currency system. Members of the public will therefore encounter the note through normal circulation once it is released.
By placing Olympic recognition on legal tender, the Bank of Botswana has created a lasting tribute that connects national sporting milestones with daily life. The commemorative banknote serves both as a functional means of exchange and as a reminder of a defining chapter in Botswana’s sporting journey.
