World Bank Backs Botswana Health System With Major Emergency Preparedness Funding. Botswana is set to strengthen its ability to respond to health crises after the World Bank approved a 43 million dollar financing package aimed at improving emergency preparedness and long term system resilience. The funding includes a 40 million dollar loan and a 3 million dollar grant.

The support will fund the Botswana Health Emergency Preparedness, Response and Resilience Project, an initiative designed to address weaknesses in medicine supply systems, disease surveillance, and health data management. The project comes at a time when the country is dealing with recurring climate related shocks, lingering strain on the health system following the COVID 19 pandemic, and a public health emergency declared in August 2025 linked to nationwide medicine shortages.

Stronger Medicine Supply and Quality Control

A key focus of the project is stabilising and modernising the medical supply chain. Plans include the rollout of an electronic Logistics Management Information System that will allow health authorities to track medicine and medical supply levels across the country in real time. The project also provides for the establishment of a climate resilient National Drug Quality Control Laboratory to strengthen oversight of pharmaceutical standards.

Upgrading Disease Detection and Data Systems

The financing will also support improvements to public health laboratories to speed up outbreak detection and response. Investments in real time health data systems are expected to enhance surveillance and decision making during emergencies.

Health Minister Dr Stephen Modise described the project as a strategic step toward building a more resilient and data driven health system. World Bank Country Director Satu Kahkonen said the initiative is designed not only to address immediate pressures but also to help Botswana achieve more efficient, equitable and sustainable healthcare delivery over the next five years.
