Jindal Mmamabula Project Expands Skills Development Through Graduate Engineer Programme. Jindal Energy Botswana has highlighted its focus on skills development and localisation through the rollout of a Graduate Engineers Trainee Programme linked to the Jindal Mmamabula Energy Project.

The initiative was discussed during an Intern Graduate Engineers Trainee Programme dinner held in Gaborone on Wednesday. Jindal Energy Botswana Country Director and Project Head Neeraj Saxena said the programme reflects cooperation between Botswana and India and is designed to translate partnership into practical outcomes.

Saxena stated that Jindal Power places emphasis on disciplined project delivery, safety standards and long term national value. He said the company’s responsibility includes building infrastructure that strengthens national capacity and technical capability.

Developed in collaboration with Botswana’s universities and facilitated by the Human Resource Development Council, the programme aligns with national skills priorities. Twenty graduate engineers have joined the intake and are being placed in a structured development pathway aimed at bridging academic training and industry competence.

The trainee initiative forms part of the broader 600 megawatt net Jindal Mmamabula Energy Project, which is under construction and scheduled for commissioning in December 2026. The project is expected to contribute to Botswana’s electricity supply and support industrial activity.

Saxena said project progress is measured through milestones, including the recent erection of the first boiler structure column, completed on schedule within a zero harm safety framework.

Beyond construction, the project has engaged more than 300 local contractors and suppliers, with over P720 million spent on citizen owned businesses. Since November 2024, more than 2,300 jobs have been created, with employment projected to peak at around 5,000 during construction and exceed 1,000 permanent roles after commissioning.

Jindal Energy Botswana has also committed over P10 million to community initiatives focused on skills development, youth employment, education support and community wellbeing, alongside the graduate training programme.
