Botswana Sets Course for Tourism-Led Growth at Francistown Gathering. Francistown became the focal point of Botswana’s tourism conversation as Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe officially launched Tourism Pitso 2026, a national dialogue taking place from 22 to 23 January. The event opens at a time when global travel patterns are shifting and local communities are seeking a stronger voice in how tourism develops and delivers benefits.

Addressing delegates, Gaolathe emphasized that the Pitso’s theme, Tourism as a Catalyst for Economic Transformation and Sustainable Growth through Partnerships, reflects a national commitment. He described tourism as a strategic pillar capable of driving inclusive economic growth, supporting job creation, strengthening environmental stewardship, and empowering communities. These goals, he noted, are aligned with the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme and National Development Plan 12.

A key message in the Vice President’s address was the importance of deeper citizen participation and stronger collaboration across sectors. He highlighted the need to reduce value leakages and retain more tourism revenue within the domestic economy, positioning this approach as vital for long-term competitiveness and sustainability.

Gaolathe also pointed to ongoing reforms and investments intended to reposition tourism as a driver of economic diversification. These include policy and legislative reviews, the development of Tourism Development Areas, infrastructure improvements, and efforts to preserve heritage assets. He stressed that achieving meaningful impact will require shared responsibility among government, the private sector, communities, and development partners.

Concluding his remarks, the Vice President formally declared Tourism Pitso 2026 open and called for honest dialogue, bold decisions, and collective action. He urged participants to work toward building a tourism sector that is resilient, inclusive, and ethically grounded, while delivering tangible benefits and opportunities for communities living alongside Botswana’s tourism resources.
