United States Hands Over P13 Million C-130 Aircraft Spares to Botswana Defence Force. The Botswana Defence Force (BDF) has received a donation of C-130 aircraft spares valued at P13 million from the United States, marking another milestone in defence cooperation between the two countries. The handover ceremony took place yesterday at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone.
The donated spares are intended to support the operation and maintenance of the BDF’s C-130 aircraft fleet. The event brought together representatives from the Botswana Defence Force and the United States government to formally mark the transfer.
Speaking during the ceremony, United States Ambassador to Botswana, Howard Vranken, described the donation as a reflection of the longstanding partnership between the two nations. He said the support demonstrated confidence in Botswana and the continued collaboration between the two defence forces. Ambassador Vranken emphasised that the handover represented more than the provision of equipment, highlighting its significance within the broader relationship between the United States and Botswana.
“This donation is more than just a transfer of equipment. It is a symbol of trust and confidence in the future of our military cooperation and our shared relationship,” Ambassador Vranken said.
He further noted that in February 2025, Botswana was approved to receive two C-130H aircraft from the United States. According to Ambassador Vranken, the aircraft are expected to be delivered within the current calendar year, further strengthening Botswana’s airlift capabilities.
The C-130 aircraft platform is widely used for various military and logistical operations, including transport, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response. The availability of spare parts plays a critical role in ensuring aircraft readiness and operational continuity.
The handover ceremony underscored ongoing defence engagement between Botswana and the United States, which includes equipment support, training, and capacity-building initiatives. The donation of the aircraft spares forms part of continued cooperation aimed at supporting the operational needs of the Botswana Defence Force.
The BDF acknowledged the contribution, noting the importance of partnerships in enhancing technical support and operational effectiveness. The event concluded with formal handover proceedings and remarks from officials in attendance.
