BDC Targets High-Impact Sectors to Drive Economic Diversification in Botswana. The Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) has reaffirmed its investment focus on sectors with the potential to deliver transformational impact for Botswana’s economy, as part of its mandate to support diversification and inclusive growth.
According to BDC, its investment strategy prioritises industries that play a critical role in broadening the country’s economic base beyond traditional activities. These sectors include manufacturing, energy, tourism, infrastructure and property development, agro-processing, healthcare, the creative industry, and financial services. Large-scale diamond mining is excluded from BDC’s investment scope.
The corporation stated that these targeted sectors are central to building a more resilient and diversified economy, while supporting sustainable development outcomes. By directing capital into areas with strong linkages across the economy, BDC aims to stimulate industrial growth, job creation, and increased participation by citizens in productive economic activity.
Manufacturing and agro-processing have been identified as important for value addition and industrial development, while energy investments support national power needs and long-term sustainability. Tourism remains a key contributor to economic activity, with infrastructure and property development playing a supporting role in enabling business expansion and service delivery.
BDC also highlighted healthcare and financial services as sectors with the capacity to improve access to essential services while contributing to economic growth. Investment in the creative industry reflects an effort to support emerging sectors that offer opportunities for skills development and enterprise growth.
Through its investment approach, BDC positions itself as a development finance institution focused on long-term impact rather than short-term returns. The corporation works with private sector partners to mobilise capital, support viable projects, and strengthen businesses operating in priority sectors.
BDC said its sector focus aligns with national development objectives aimed at reducing economic concentration and promoting inclusive participation. By investing across a range of industries, the corporation seeks to contribute to a more balanced economic structure that can better withstand external shocks.
The corporation reiterated that its investment decisions are guided by the potential of projects to deliver economic transformation, support diversification, and create lasting value for Botswana’s economy.
