Botswana Signs MoU With KP Group to Advance Clean Energy Investment and 5GW Renewable Capacity. Botswana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global renewable energy company KP Group, marking a significant development in the country’s clean energy agenda. The agreement outlines a framework for cooperation that could facilitate up to $4 billion in clean energy investments and support the development of nearly 5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity.

The MoU was signed under the leadership of the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Kenewendo, and focuses on accelerating renewable energy generation while modernising critical energy infrastructure. According to the Ministry, the agreement aligns with Botswana’s national priorities of improving energy security, upgrading infrastructure and strengthening participation in regional power markets.

The collaboration is expected to contribute to increased domestic power generation capacity and improved grid resilience. It also positions Botswana to explore opportunities for electricity trade within the Southern African region, in line with existing regional energy frameworks.

In addition to infrastructure and generation targets, the MoU includes a skills development component. Under the agreement, KP Group will fund 30 scholarships each year for Batswana to study in fields related to renewable energy, engineering, sustainability and associated disciplines. The scholarships are intended to support the development of local technical expertise to participate in and support the country’s energy transition.

Minister Kenewendo highlighted that the energy transition agenda places people at its centre, with skills development forming a key part of long-term national development objectives. She noted that the partnership reflects Botswana’s intention to pursue inclusive growth alongside technological and infrastructure advancement.

The government has indicated that the MoU provides a strategic framework rather than a final implementation plan. Progress will depend on effective execution, policy clarity and collaboration between public and private stakeholders.

The agreement represents the starting point of a longer-term process aimed at expanding clean energy capacity, strengthening institutions and mobilising private investment within Botswana’s energy sector.
