Botswana Charts Path to Greater Local Value in Mining Sector. Botswana is positioning itself at a critical juncture in the evolution of its mining industry, with renewed focus on translating mineral wealth into wider economic benefits. This direction was underscored at a recent Value Chain Development Workshop held in Gaborone, convened by the Ministry of Minerals and Energy in collaboration with Debswana.

The workshop placed emphasis on strengthening local value creation within the mining sector, moving beyond extraction to activities that support industrial development and citizen participation. Discussions centred on how mining can serve as a catalyst for broader economic activity by linking it more closely with manufacturing, services, and skills development.

Debswana, jointly owned by the Government of Botswana and De Beers, participated in the engagement as part of ongoing efforts to align mining operations with national development priorities. The focus of the dialogue was on identifying opportunities within the mining value chain where local businesses, particularly citizen-owned enterprises, can play a greater role.

The Ministry of Minerals and Energy highlighted the importance of building a mining ecosystem that supports sustainability and inclusivity. Participants explored ways to enhance local participation in areas such as equipment maintenance, supply services, and downstream activities linked to mineral production. The aim is to ensure that mining contributes more directly to employment creation and industrial growth.

The workshop also reflected Botswana’s broader objective of economic diversification, recognising that mining remains a cornerstone of the economy while also offering opportunities to stimulate other sectors. By strengthening linkages between mining and related industries, stakeholders noted the potential to retain more value within the domestic economy.

The Value Chain Development Workshop served as a platform for collaboration between government and industry, reinforcing a shared commitment to maximising the long-term benefits of mineral resources. As Botswana continues to refine its mining strategy, such engagements signal an ongoing shift toward deeper value addition and more inclusive economic participation.
