Botswana Raises Disease Surveillance After Foot and Mouth Outbreak Reported in South Africa. Botswana has been placed on high alert following the reported outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in South Africa’s Waterberg District in Limpopo Province. The development has prompted heightened vigilance, particularly in districts that border South Africa.

In a press release, the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture urged farmers and livestock stakeholders to remain alert, with specific attention drawn to Tsabong, Goodhope, Ramotswa, Tlokweng, Kgatleng and Mahalapye. The ministry highlighted the importance of early detection and strict adherence to preventative measures to reduce the risk of the disease spreading into Botswana.

As part of precautionary actions, the ministry called for the control of livestock movement through herding and kraaling, especially during night hours. Farmers were also instructed to ensure that all cattle are properly identified through branding and the use of BAITS ear tags, as part of national livestock traceability requirements.

The ministry further advised livestock owners and the public to immediately report any suspected signs of Foot and Mouth Disease. Symptoms listed in the statement include lameness, excessive salivation or drooling, and the presence of ulcers in the mouth, muzzle or hooves. Such cases should be reported to the nearest veterinary office or the Botswana Police Service.

Additional concerns highlighted in the release include the possible movement of livestock across borders. The ministry called for reports of South African cattle that may have crossed into Botswana, Botswana livestock that may have crossed into South Africa, or animals suspected to have returned from across the border.

The press release also urged the public to report vandalism of disease control fences, illegal crossings at undesignated points, and any suspected illegal use or smuggling of Foot and Mouth Disease vaccines into the country.

The Ministry of Lands and Agriculture emphasised that cooperation from farmers, livestock handlers and the general public is critical in protecting the country’s livestock industry. The alert forms part of ongoing efforts to safeguard animal health and maintain effective disease control measures in Botswana.
