CIPA Engages Old Naledi Entrepreneurs on Business Formalisation and IP Protection. The Companies and Intellectual Property Authority (CIPA) has held an engagement session with community leaders in Old Naledi to raise awareness about the importance of business registration and intellectual property protection. The session, led by Caretaker Registrar General Mr. Godfrey Molefe, formed part of CIPA’s ongoing efforts to support entrepreneurship and empower emerging business communities.

The outreach focused on three key themes: formalising informal enterprises, educating residents on intellectual property rights, and enhancing understanding of copyright matters. With many entrepreneurs in Old Naledi running informal operations, CIPA highlighted the benefits of registering a business or company name, such as improved access to financing, procurement opportunities, and long-term business credibility.

In addition, CIPA emphasised the value of protecting intellectual property, including traditional knowledge and cultural expressions. This is particularly important in communities like Old Naledi, which holds a wealth of cultural heritage and creative practices that can be safeguarded and commercialised responsibly. The session also covered basic copyright awareness, helping local creators understand how their work can be protected from misuse.

Old Naledi was chosen for the outreach based on its reputation as a vibrant entrepreneurial hub. The area is home to small manufacturers, artisans, service providers, and informal traders who contribute to the local economy. Strengthening their understanding of business structures and IP rights plays a key role in supporting sustainable enterprise growth.

CIPA received a warm welcome from Kgosi Edward, alongside Councillors Mapitse and Montsho, and other community leaders who acknowledged the importance of bringing essential business knowledge directly to the people.
