Botswana Secures Major Energy and Minerals Agreements with Oman, Signalling New Opportunities for Local Industry. Botswana has entered a new phase of international cooperation following landmark agreements with leading Omani entities, paving the way for large-scale investments in energy infrastructure and mineral exploration. The developments follow President Duma Boko’s recent mission to the Sultanate of Oman, which has now resulted in concrete commitments between the two nations.

President Boko described his visit as “a mission of purpose,” noting that discussions with the Oman Investment Authority (OIA) CEO, H.E. Abdulsalam Al Murshidi, were focused on practical partnerships that support Botswana’s long-term development goals. Those engagements have now materialised into Memoranda of Agreement signed through the Ministry of Minerals and Energy.

Among the key commitments is the implementation of a 500MW Solar PV project, positioning Botswana to significantly expand its renewable energy generation capacity. For local entrepreneurs, especially those operating in solar installation, engineering, manufacturing, and energy services, a project of this scale presents a range of future supply-chain and contracting opportunities.

Energy security forms another major pillar of the agreements. Botswana Oil will partner with Omani counterparts to construct an inland petroleum storage facility at Tshele Hills. The collaboration also includes support for petroleum bulk coastal storage in Walvis Bay, strengthening regional supply mechanisms. These developments could support more stable fuel logistics for businesses across the country, improving reliability for transport operators, manufacturers, and agricultural producers.

In the minerals sector, Botswana and Oman have agreed to deepen cooperation in exploration and development. This collaboration creates potential openings for local suppliers in drilling, surveying, mineral services, and related industrial support.

President Boko emphasised the long-term impact of these agreements, stating that they represent the beginning of major infrastructure and industrial projects that will shape Botswana’s future. He noted that the partnerships align with the country’s ambitions for economic resilience and self-reliance.
