Digital Delta Data Centre Ushers in a New Era for Botswana’s ICT and Business Landscape. Botswana has taken a major leap forward in strengthening its digital backbone with the official launch of the Digital Delta Data Centre, a state-of-the-art facility owned by the government and operated by Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet). The development marks an important milestone for the country’s technology ecosystem, offering secure, scalable and reliable data storage for both public services and private-sector organisations.

The Digital Delta Data Centre is certified as a Tier III facility by the Uptime Institute, placing it among globally recognised data centres designed to deliver high levels of performance and uptime. As demand for digital services increases across sectors such as finance, retail, logistics and education, the new centre is expected to play a significant role in supporting Botswana’s expanding digital economy.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of Communications and Innovation David Tshere highlighted the centre’s value in accelerating national digital transformation. He noted that the facility will not only support government systems but also serve the broader business community seeking secure data hosting solutions within Botswana.

Tshere also confirmed that the government is reviewing the Data Protection Act to ensure that more data generated within Botswana is stored locally. He described this shift as practical and timely, given the availability of a modern, secure and government-owned data facility capable of meeting the needs of multiple industries.

The project, which created over 270 jobs during construction, is Botswana’s first carrier-neutral Tier III certified data centre. This neutrality ensures that businesses can connect through their preferred service providers while benefiting from world-class infrastructure.

For local entrepreneurs, SMEs and tech-driven industries, the Digital Delta Data Centre represents new opportunities to develop cloud-based solutions, enhance cybersecurity and improve service reliability. Several citizen-owned subcontractors contributed to the construction phase, gaining valuable skills that strengthen Botswana’s ICT talent pipeline.

With government systems set to migrate into the new facility, Minister Tshere emphasised that transitions will be carefully managed to maintain continuity. He reaffirmed the national goal of connecting every Motswana to the digital world, positioning the centre as a foundation for future innovation and growth.
