HATAB Reaffirms Tourism’s Economic Weight as Sector Sustains Over 50,000 JobsAddressing claims that the sector benefits only a few, Rakorong referenced data from tax authorities showing that 360 companies are classified as Large Taxpayers, each contributing over P10 million annually. Rakorong noted that in several rural communities, tourism is the single largest source of employment and income, providing livelihoods where limited alternatives exist. She stressed that the industry plays a critical role in bringing foreign exchange into the country, supporting both local businesses and Botswana’s broader economic stability.

Addressing claims that the sector benefits only a few, Rakorong referenced data from tax authorities showing that 360 companies are classified as Large Taxpayers, each contributing over P10 million annually. Ten percent of these companies are from the tourism sector, collectively accounting for a meaningful share of income tax collections.

“These figures demonstrate that tourism contributes hundreds of millions in taxes and royalties, strengthening government revenue and supporting national development,” she said. She added that for many larger tourism enterprises, tax and related public payments represent the highest share of their value added.

Rakorong also highlighted the significant payments tourism businesses make directly to local communities through lease and sub-lease agreements in areas where land rights are community-owned. These payments provide essential revenue streams for community trusts, further disproving claims that tourism benefits only a small segment of society.

Responding to concerns about wealth extraction, Rakorong emphasised that the sector’s revenue is a product of investment rather than extraction. High-quality tourism facilities in remote locations require substantial capital, making reinvestment a natural part of sustaining operations and long-term growth.
