Khumo Makwa Crafts Tebogo’s Signature Diamond Bracelet. An inspiring story of talent, precision and entrepreneurial focus has emerged from Botswana’s jewellery industry, as 89 Carat Street Founder Khumo Makwa continues to make her mark through high-quality craftsmanship and custom luxury pieces. Her latest work, a bespoke diamond hand bracelet designed for Olympic gold medalist Letsile Tebogo, has drawn fresh attention to the country’s creative sector and its growing footprint in global markets.

Makwa, a De Beers Group Shining Light Awards alumna, began her journey with formal training in Polished Diamond Grading through the De Beers Group Institute of Diamonds. She later refined her practical expertise at Keith White Diamond Mastery in South Africa. Her business acumen was strengthened further when she completed the Stanford Graduate School of Business Go-To-Market Botswana program, equipping her to scale a brand rooted in craftsmanship and design innovation.

Established in 2018, 89 Carat Street has grown into a premium jewellery design and manufacturing business serving clients across Botswana and abroad. The company’s offering includes bespoke rings, pendants, cufflinks, earrings, trend-forward collections, repairs, and loose diamond sourcing. Its commitment to detail has earned the brand visibility in both personal and high-profile commissions.

One such project was a custom jewellery gift designed for Honourable Philip E. Davis, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Most recently, De Beers commissioned Makwa to craft a one-of-a-kind bracelet for Letsile Tebogo, using natural diamonds sourced in Botswana. Before creating the piece, Makwa met with Tebogo to understand the story behind it. The final bracelet embodies themes of love and family, with intertwined links symbolising his late mother, his sister, and himself.

Today, 89 Carat Street is powered by a team of three jewellery designers and goldsmiths who serve local and international clients, including partnerships with Sivanna Diamonds and Eves Jewellery in Botswana, Nigeria and the UAE. The brand continues to champion Botswana’s craftsmanship on the world stage while expanding its footprint through bespoke design excellence.
