Botswana to Roll Out Toll Gates in Major Road Infrastructure Upgrade. President Duma Boko has announced that the government will introduce toll roads as part of an ambitious plan to enhance and sustain Botswana’s national road infrastructure.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Boko said the move marks a shift toward self-sustaining infrastructure financing, ensuring that the country’s growing road network remains well-maintained and efficient. The toll system will also help improve travel quality, safety, and logistics for motorists and businesses across the country.
The initiative includes the ongoing construction of the A3 road, a key national route connecting major towns, and the planned feasibility studies for a dual carriage toll road along the A1 highway — a stretch covering more than 600 kilometres. The A1 serves as a vital commercial corridor linking Botswana’s northern and southern regions, making it a strategic investment in both mobility and economic competitiveness.
President Boko emphasised that the toll system will be designed to meet international standards, providing reliable, high-quality roads that facilitate trade and support economic growth. The government’s approach seeks to attract private sector participation and ensure that infrastructure investments deliver long-term value for citizens and businesses alike.
Entrepreneurs in logistics, construction, and transport are expected to benefit from the increased activity and improved connectivity the initiative will generate. The development also aligns with Botswana’s broader goal of positioning itself as a regional hub for trade and investment through modern, well-maintained infrastructure.
