Liquidity Crunch Deepens as Botswana Businesses Face Cash Flow Strain. A severe liquidity crunch is tightening its grip on Botswana’s economy, with businesses struggling to stay afloat amid reduced government spending and delayed payments.

Business consultant Buca Matenge has warned that the lack of circulating cash is threatening the survival of many enterprises, particularly small and medium-sized businesses that depend on steady payment cycles. “SMEs are collapsing because money is not circulating,” Matenge said, stressing that the slowdown has disrupted supply chains, stifled trade, and weakened confidence in the market.

Recent data shows a significant decline in Government Purchase Orders (GPOs) — a key driver of cash flow for local suppliers and contractors — which have dropped from P1.6 billion in May to just P400 million in October 2025. The sharp contraction has reduced liquidity in the broader economy, making it harder for businesses to access working capital or meet operational expenses.

Economists have observed that the liquidity squeeze has created a ripple effect across industries, with suppliers facing mounting debts, contractors delaying projects, and retailers experiencing declining sales. The tightening conditions have also placed pressure on banks, as borrowers struggle to service loans due to slow payments from government and private clients.

For Botswana’s entrepreneurial sector, which forms the backbone of job creation and innovation, the situation presents a growing challenge. Many business owners are now calling for targeted fiscal interventions, faster payment processes, and renewed support for SMEs to restore market stability and prevent further closures.

As liquidity remains constrained, stakeholders agree that reviving cash flow and confidence will be critical to sustaining economic growth and protecting the country’s business ecosystem.
