BITC Reaffirms Transparency in Zotus Smart City Project Plans. The Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and due diligence in the handling of the proposed Zotus Smart City project set for Ghanzi.

Speaking during a media briefing in Gaborone, BITC Chief Executive Officer Keletsositse Olebile clarified that the ambitious development—planned for Junction 44—aims to establish a smart city integrating key sectors such as agriculture, logistics, renewable energy, aviation, and tourism. The project is structured to proceed at no financial cost to the Government of Botswana.

Olebile explained that the project’s initial proposal near the Okavango Delta was moved to Ghanzi after consultations and environmental assessments. “This decision reflects a balance between economic growth and environmental responsibility,” he said.

He added that the Zotus Group, which first engaged with Botswana in 2020, has actively participated in major international investment platforms, including the World Economic Forum in Davos, to attract potential investors. The initiative has also advanced through several non-binding Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with the Office of the President, the Trans-Kalahari Corridor, and the Ghanzi District Council.

According to Olebile, Zotus will serve as the project manager, coordinating investment mobilisation for the 3.5-kilometre development zone. “Extensive due diligence has been undertaken, and all relevant authorities have been engaged to ensure adherence to national laws and governance requirements,” he said.

He further confirmed that no binding agreement has been signed to date, though the government has expressed its support for the project’s strategic economic potential. Construction is expected to commence in 2026.
