Lucara Botswana Reinforces Sustainability as Cornerstone of Its Mining Strategy. Lucara Botswana has reaffirmed its position as a sustainability-driven mining company, placing environmental and social responsibility at the core of its operations. Speaking at the Botswana Sustainability Week in Gaborone, Kesego Kereemang, the company’s SHE & Community Relations Manager, highlighted that sustainability is not merely a compliance measure but an essential part of Lucara’s business philosophy.
Participating in a panel discussion on Sustainability and ESG-Aligned Organisational Practices, Kereemang said Lucara’s operations are firmly guided by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, fully aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“At Lucara Botswana, we are champions of ESG. Sustainability is embedded in our core business and decision-making. We are ISO 14001:2015 certified and also Responsible Jewellery Council certified, which demonstrates our commitment to ethical and responsible mining standards,” she said.
Kereemang emphasized that Lucara is dedicated to minimizing its environmental impact through responsible tailings management, water stewardship, and ongoing ecological protection. The company, which operates the Karowe Mine, has aligned its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives with 10 of the 17 UN SDGs, using them as a framework for inclusive and sustainable development.
Lucara’s sustainability journey began in 2018, when it became a signatory to the UN Global Compact, a voluntary initiative that promotes human rights, environmental care, and anti-corruption measures.
In 2024, Lucara Botswana invested over P5 million in community development initiatives. These projects focus on education, local employment, and infrastructure development in surrounding communities. “We focus on building lasting socio-economic value and strengthening our partnerships with stakeholders,” Kereemang added.
She also highlighted Lucara’s mine closure strategy, which prioritizes environmental rehabilitation and post-mining community engagement. “For Lucara, sustainability goes beyond compliance—it’s a long-term commitment to responsible mining and shared prosperity.”
