Morupule Coal Mine Shines at BCM Inter-Mine First Aid Competition, Reinforcing Safety Leadership. Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) has once again demonstrated its commitment to workplace safety by securing third place at the Botswana Chamber of Mines (BCM) Inter-Mine First Aid Competition, held at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST). The annual event brought together leading mining operators, including Debswana, Khoemacau, Lucara, Botash, alongside Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) and BIUST, with DTC Botswana attending as observers.

The competition tested teams on their ability to respond to realistic emergency scenarios with speed, accuracy, and composure. Thirteen teams participated, highlighting Botswana’s unified approach to enhancing workplace safety and emergency preparedness across the mining sector.

MCM’s team impressed judges with a well-coordinated, precise, and swift response, reflecting the company’s ongoing investment in employee training and safety protocols. Their performance demonstrated not only technical expertise but also teamwork and composure under pressure, earning them the podium finish and further cementing their reputation as a safety-conscious operation.

BCM Chief Executive Officer, Charles Siwawa, emphasised that the competition is “not just about lifting a trophy, but about participation for a greater cause, safety,” while also highlighting the legal requirement for at least 33% of mining employees to be first aid certified. Safety, he noted, is central to sustaining a productive and resilient mining workforce.

Speaking at the event, Sedireng Serumola, Managing Director of DTC Botswana, encouraged miners to make “working safely a keystone habit,” noting that a strong safety culture drives productivity and sustainable growth. Mompati Bontsibokae from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund added that competitions like this are critical for life-saving knowledge exchange and skills development.

The victory complements MCM’s proactive measures to address emerging workplace challenges, including extreme heat, unpredictable weather, and climate-related risks, while reinforcing a broader culture of safety and emergency readiness across Botswana’s mining industry.

Debswana’s Jwaneng Mine took the top spot, with Lucara finishing second. MCM’s third-place achievement underscores its dedication to protecting lives, fostering employee empowerment, and setting benchmarks for safety excellence in Botswana’s mining sector.
