Botswana Explores Regulated Gaming as a Catalyst for Economic Growth. At the Botswana Mining Conference 2025, Mr. Moruntshi Kemorwale, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Gambling Authority, presented a compelling vision on how regulated gaming could contribute to Botswana’s economic diversification and sustainable growth.
Titled “Leveraging Regulated Gaming to Transform Botswana’s Economy,” Kemorwale highlighted the global gaming and gambling industry’s scale, valued at over USD 500 billion, and its support of more than 200 million jobs across technology, tourism, hospitality, sports, and entertainment. He noted that innovations such as AI-driven betting platforms, immersive digital casinos, eSports, and virtual gaming ecosystems have reshaped economic models in major markets worldwide.
Kemorwale encouraged conference delegates, including entrepreneurs and investors, to “think outside the box” and explore how Botswana could harness its own gaming sector. Drawing comparisons to Las Vegas, Macau, and Sun City, he emphasized how gambling revenues in these regions have financed urban development, infrastructure, and social programmes.
He posed a provocative question to the audience: “Can Gaborone not be funded mainly from gambling and gaming revenue, given its concentration of casinos, betting houses, and limited payout machines?” The statement underlined the untapped potential of Botswana’s regulated gaming industry as a strategic economic driver.
The presentation stressed that with robust regulation, responsible gambling frameworks, and targeted investment, the sector could play a pivotal role in achieving Botswana’s Vision 2036 goals, creating employment opportunities, driving technological innovation, and supporting inclusive economic growth.
