Jwaneng Mine Partners with University of Botswana to Equip Future Environmental Leaders. Jwaneng Mine recently hosted Environmental Health students from the University of Botswana for a hands-on industrial visit designed to bridge academic learning with practical mining experience. The initiative forms part of Debswana’s broader commitment to advancing education and fostering a generation of environmentally conscious professionals within Botswana’s mining sector.

The engagement began with a detailed presentation by Mr. Kenanao Modimoofile, Jwaneng Mine’s Safety and Health Manager, who provided an overview of the mine’s safety, health, and environmental management practices. Students were introduced to the mine’s approach to sustainability and operational excellence, gaining insights into how environmental stewardship is embedded in mining processes.

Following the briefing, the students toured the Jwaneng Mine pit, where they observed large-scale mining operations and the integration of safety measures on-site. The visit continued at the EM14 Workshop, where they learned about equipment maintenance and technical systems that ensure efficiency and worker safety in one of the world’s most productive diamond mines.

Professor Wilfred Nunu from the University of Botswana expressed appreciation to the Jwaneng Mine’s Safety and Sustainable Development (S&SD) team for organizing an engaging and impactful experience. He highlighted the significance of such partnerships in producing skilled, responsible graduates ready to contribute to sustainable resource management.

For Botswana’s business and education sectors, this collaboration exemplifies how industry-academic partnerships can strengthen workforce development and environmental responsibility — key components in achieving long-term national sustainability goals.

Debswana reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young professionals by creating platforms that connect learning with real-world applications, ensuring that future leaders are equipped with the knowledge and exposure needed to drive responsible growth in the mining industry.
