Morupule Coal Mine Hands Over P560,000 Home Under Bonno Housing Programme. Morupule Coal Mine (MCM), in partnership with the Ministry of Water and Human Settlement, has officially handed over a newly constructed two-bedroom house valued at P560,000 under the government’s Bonno Housing Programme — a flagship initiative aimed at providing affordable, dignified housing for Batswana.
The house, completed in just two months, was funded through proceeds from the MCM CEO’s Annual Cycling Challenge, a Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative that unites employees, partners, and sponsors to raise funds for community development projects.
Speaking at the handover, MCM Chief Executive Officer Edwin Elias highlighted the project’s innovation and community impact, noting that the home includes several enhancements beyond the standard government-approved design. These include an additional bedroom, veranda, aluminum windows, full interior fittings, and a geyser. The house was also handed over fully furnished to ensure the beneficiary family could move in immediately.
“This house represents our ongoing commitment to creating value beyond mining — by investing in the social and economic wellbeing of communities around us,” said Elias.
Minister of Water and Human Settlement Onneetse Ramogapi, who also serves as Member of Parliament for Palapye, commended the collaboration, noting that this house marks the 100,001st built under the Bonno Housing Programme. He described the initiative as a national movement toward inclusivity, dignity, and sustainable livelihoods, adding that access to decent housing forms a foundation for social and economic progress.
The project received major sponsorship support from Stanbic Bank Botswana and other partners who continue to back MCM’s cycling challenge and community-focused initiatives.
