Dangote Cement Commits P65 Million to Cement Processing Plant Near Gaborone. Botswana’s construction and manufacturing sectors are set for a major boost as Dangote Cement, through its subsidiary Sephaku Cement, confirmed a P65 million investment in a new cement processing and packaging plant near Gaborone.
Announced by company executive Duncan Leith at the Pula Investment Conference during the Global Expo last week, the project represents Dangote Cement’s first industrial venture in Botswana. The plant will import bulk cement from South Africa for local packaging and distribution, strengthening supply chains and promoting local value addition.
“Our plan is to bring bulk cement into Botswana in trucks carrying bulk bags. These trucks will then offload the cement at our processing plant and proceed to Morupule Coal Mine to purchase coal—essentially matching each truckload of cement with a ton of locally procured coal,” Leith explained.
He noted that the P65 million investment covers the initial development phase, which will focus on the construction of a bulk offloading and packaging plant. “Wherever possible, all required materials and inputs will be sourced locally. We are committed to supporting local suppliers,” he added.
The facility will be built 15 kilometers north of Gaborone along the A1 road and is expected to employ 36 people once operational. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026, with operations set to commence by the fourth quarter.
Leith further revealed that Phase 2 will explore the development of a full cement grinding facility, utilizing fly ash from Morupule’s coal-fired power stations to begin local cement production and reduce import dependency.
