Botswana Government Moves to Acquire 15% Stake in Botala Energy’s Serowe LNG Project. The Botswana government, through its mining investment arm, the Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB), has announced plans to acquire a 15 percent equity stake in Botala Energy, the developer of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project near Serowe.

This follows Botala Energy’s recent confirmation that the government intends to exercise its option under Section 40 of the Mines and Minerals Act, granting MDCB the right to participate in the Serowe Coal Bed Methane (CBM) Project. The move represents a significant show of confidence in Botswana’s domestic energy development and its growing natural gas sector.

Botala Energy’s Serowe CBM Project is one of the most advanced gas developments in the country, with the potential to supply cleaner energy solutions and contribute to Botswana’s long-term energy security. The project aims to harness the country’s coal bed methane resources to produce liquefied natural gas for industrial and power generation use.

Government participation through MDCB ensures that Botswana’s citizens stand to benefit from the commercial success of the project while maintaining national oversight of key energy assets. The investment also aligns with Botswana’s broader economic diversification agenda, which prioritises expanding local participation in strategic industries, particularly energy and mining.

The planned equity acquisition underscores the government’s commitment to developing sustainable energy infrastructure and leveraging public-private partnerships to strengthen the country’s self-sufficiency in power generation.
