Okavango Delta Honoured as Best Sustainable Safari Destination at Global Awards. Botswana’s tourism sector has once again taken the global spotlight as the Okavango Delta was named the Best Destination for a Sustainable Safari at the 2025 TRAVELBOOK Awards, held in Berlin, Germany on 23 September.

This achievement underscores Botswana’s long-standing reputation for balancing conservation with economic growth. The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has long been recognised for its pristine landscapes, diverse wildlife, and the careful management policies that ensure its protection for future generations. Winning this award places Botswana at the forefront of sustainable travel, strengthening the country’s brand as a premier eco-tourism destination.

For Botswana’s business community, the recognition is more than symbolic. It represents expanded opportunities within the tourism value chain, from eco-lodges and safari operators to transport, hospitality, and local suppliers. With global travellers increasingly prioritising destinations that emphasise sustainability, the award is expected to drive increased visibility and market demand for Botswana’s tourism offerings.

The accolade was received on behalf of the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) by Ms. Mercy Segopodiso Matlho, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of Botswana in Berlin. Her presence highlighted Botswana’s strong diplomatic and economic ties with Europe, a key source market for inbound tourism.

Industry stakeholders view the recognition as a call to continue investing in innovative, environmentally conscious tourism practices. Maintaining the Okavango’s ecological integrity will not only preserve a natural wonder but also ensure that communities, entrepreneurs, and businesses benefit from the jobs and revenue generated by a thriving, sustainable safari economy.
