VP Gaolathe Outlines Economic Transformation Priorities. Acting President and Minister of Finance, Mr. Ndaba Nkhosinati Gaolathe, has underscored government’s commitment to tackling pressing economic challenges while laying the foundation for long-term transformation. Speaking at a kgotla meeting in Bophirima Ward, he outlined a roadmap that targets unemployment, infrastructure renewal, and efficient public spending.

Mr. Gaolathe said the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) remains central to government’s strategy, with a strong emphasis on diversifying income streams and reducing reliance on traditional sectors. He highlighted agriculture, state-owned enterprises, and transport infrastructure — both rail and air — as priority areas for revitalisation.

For businesses, improved transport corridors and revived state enterprises could enhance trade efficiency and unlock value chains. The Acting President also identified water security and the digital economy as critical levers for growth, noting that investment in these areas would not only safeguard livelihoods but also create new opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship.

On the social front, Mr. Gaolathe emphasised that the BETP seeks to empower citizens through technology adoption, alongside strengthening healthcare and education systems to build a competitive workforce.

He further confirmed that international engagements have already secured more than USD 246 million to support Botswana’s economic revival efforts. These funds are expected to accelerate the rollout of strategic projects under the BETP

“Botswana is heading to her ‘True North,’” Mr. Gaolathe affirmed, stressing that the country’s transformation depends on aligning resources with national priorities and mobilising collective effort.
