Google Engagement Signals New Digital Revenue Path for Botswana Creators. Botswana’s creative sector may soon see a major breakthrough in digital content monetisation following ongoing discussions between the government and global tech giant Google.
Speaking at the Creative Industry Summit on Friday, Minister of Sports and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, revealed that his ministry has engaged with Google Africa headquarters in Kenya and is preparing to advance talks with the company’s US headquarters. The goal is to accelerate inclusion of Botswana in Google’s content monetisation rollout.
Kelebeng highlighted that Google is adopting a regional approach, which will not only cover Botswana but also other Southern African countries currently excluded from monetisation platforms. “This means our creators will benefit as part of a broader regional package, accessing larger audiences and revenue streams alongside their neighbours,” he explained.
For Botswana’s entrepreneurs and digital creators, this development could open fresh business opportunities. Monetisation would allow musicians, filmmakers, influencers, and content producers to generate income directly from platforms such as YouTube, which has become a key revenue source for creators globally.
Industry players see this as a crucial step toward unlocking the economic potential of the creative sector, positioning it as a viable contributor to Botswana’s diversification agenda. With improved infrastructure, increased internet penetration, and government backing, local creators could soon access the same tools and revenue models available to their peers across the world.
The move underscores how public-private partnerships in the digital economy can empower local industries, expand export potential for cultural content, and inspire new investment in the creative value chain.
