BPC Announces Load Shedding as Morupule B Units Undergo Repairs. Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) has confirmed that load shedding will be implemented from September 15, following forced outages at Morupule B Power Station. The corporation stated that two units at the facility are currently out of service due to defects and scheduled maintenance, affecting the national grid’s capacity.

I According to BPC, Unit 2 is expected to be restored by September 24, while Unit 1 is set to return to service on September 28. In the meantime, power cuts will be scheduled during peak demand hours, specifically from 6:00 am to 10:00 am and again from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

For entrepreneurs and businesses, the announcement signals a period of operational adjustments. Companies in manufacturing, retail, and hospitality—sectors that rely heavily on consistent electricity—will need to plan for disruptions during key working hours. Smaller enterprises may also face challenges, particularly those without backup power solutions such as generators or solar systems.

The corporation has urged customers to use electricity responsibly during this period to ease pressure on the grid and reduce the severity of outages. Businesses are encouraged to adopt energy-saving measures, reschedule non-essential operations outside of peak times, and explore alternative energy options to maintain productivity.

While the temporary disruptions present challenges, some opportunities exist for innovation. Suppliers of renewable energy systems, backup power solutions, and energy-efficient equipment could see increased demand as enterprises seek resilience against power instability.

BPC has assured the public that technicians are working diligently to restore the affected units and minimize the impact of the load shedding programme. Updates on the restoration process will be shared as progress is made.
