Tataki Mine Reopens Under GCR Group, Boosting Botswana’s Mining Industry. Tataki Mine in the North-East District will officially resume operations tomorrow, marking a significant milestone for Botswana’s mining sector. The reopening will be officiated by President Advocate Duma Boko and hosted by GCR Group, the new owners of the operation.
Previously known as Tati Nickel Mine, the site had been dormant for nearly a decade before GCR Group took steps to revive it. Now renamed Tataki Mine, the operation is set to position itself as a major player in the extraction and processing of polymetallic resources.
Tataki Mine holds substantial reserves of nickel, copper, cobalt, and platinum group metals. Under its renewed operations, the mine will produce nickel and cobalt hydroxide precipitates, copper cathodes, platinum group metal bars, and other valuable outputs that are in high demand on global markets.
According to GCR Group Chief Operating Officer Lukasz Abramowicz, the company intends to make further investments in expanding the mine’s production capabilities over the coming years. He noted that Tataki is projected to generate over USD 4.2 billion in revenue within the next decade. Importantly, operations at the mine are expected to contribute an estimated 1.5% increase to Botswana’s annual GDP.
Beyond national revenue, Tataki Mine’s reopening is expected to stimulate local economic activity by creating 400 jobs in nearby communities. This development also opens new opportunities for Botswana’s entrepreneurs and suppliers in related industries, from logistics and construction to support services for mining operations.
