Botswana Pushes for Further Tariff Reductions in Ongoing U.S. Trade Talks. The Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship has confirmed that Botswana will continue engaging with the United States in an effort to further reduce, or potentially eliminate, the 15 percent tariffs currently applied to certain exports.

This follows a significant development where U.S. authorities recently cut reciprocal tariffs on Botswana’s exports from 37 percent to 15 percent, easing pressure on local producers and exporters. The adjustment forms part of a broader shift in Washington’s trade policy, which under the Trump administration has moved from unilateral concessions toward reciprocal arrangements.

For Botswana’s business community, the tariff reduction represents an important opening in one of the world’s largest consumer markets. Industries ranging from agro-processing and textiles to manufacturing and mining-related products stand to benefit from improved access and competitiveness in the U.S. market.

Entrepreneurs and exporters have been encouraged to explore the opportunities that arise from the new tariff structure, while also preparing to adapt to evolving trade conditions. Lower tariffs can boost profitability, create room for expansion, and attract new investments into export-focused ventures.

However, officials emphasised that Botswana will continue to negotiate for further improvements, noting that the country’s long-term objective is to secure more favourable trade conditions that support diversification and sustainable economic growth.

The talks also take place against the backdrop of discussions around the future of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which has been instrumental in shaping U.S.-Africa trade relations. Clarity on AGOA’s continuation will be critical for Botswana’s exporters in planning ahead.
