Botswana Engages Turkish Airlines to Expand Global Air Connectivity and Tourism Opportunities. Botswana is taking strategic steps to enhance its international air connectivity following high-level discussions with Turkish Airlines in Istanbul, Turkey. The talks, aimed at exploring direct long-haul flight opportunities, were led by a Botswana delegation including Mr. Hassan Bouzeliffa, Special Envoy of the President, alongside Ms. Mmabasotho Tibe, CEO of the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC), Dr. Bao Mosinyi, CEO of the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB), and Mr. Keotshepile Mphusu representing the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO).

Turkish Airlines was represented by Mr. Levent Konukcu, Chief Investment & Technology Officer, and his executive team. The engagement underscored a shared commitment to boosting tourism development, increasing tourist arrivals, and supporting economic growth through enhanced air access.

For Botswana’s business and entrepreneurial community, improved connectivity presents tangible opportunities. Direct flights from global hubs can facilitate trade, attract foreign investment, and open new markets for Botswana’s goods and services. The country’s tourism sector, already a key contributor to GDP, stands to benefit from increased international arrivals, creating opportunities for hotels, tour operators, and related service industries.

The discussions also highlighted the potential for public-private partnerships to develop infrastructure, promote investment in aviation services, and strengthen Botswana’s position as a regional hub for tourism and commerce. By fostering stronger ties with an established global airline, Botswana aims to provide more seamless travel experiences for both leisure and business travelers.

This initiative aligns with the country’s broader agenda of economic diversification under Vision 2036, positioning Botswana as a more accessible, competitive, and attractive destination for international tourists and investors alike. Both parties expressed optimism that the dialogue will pave the way for concrete agreements that enhance bilateral cooperation and unlock growth opportunities across aviation, tourism, and trade.
